For shame!
How dare they use that tagline?! How dare they make such a unwarranted and ridiculous comparison as that of Obama's historic campaign and the return of Britney?! "Yes we can" encapsulated a nation struggling with the yoke of slavery, oppression and racism that has plagued it since its inception, over 200 years ago. And now, finally, we've made a statement that that is no longer who we are. We as a nation, while not completely changed from our racist past, are changing. How dare they insult the magnitude of what is happening in the country right now?!
How dare they?!
A few days ago Odetta died (after the RS went to print, no doubt). That is significant. Her career was historic and it's a significant loss that she won't be singing at Obama's inauguration.
I'd like to take this moment to tell the world that we can't be fooled that easily. We understand the difference between fabricated success and actual success.
It sounds funny to say, given that I am not a religious person in the least, but the way I'm feeling towards Odetta's life's work right now is best described by what I imagine religious people are feeling when they say "God Bless You."
God Bless You, Odetta. You stood above the crowd, even in a wheelchair.
